The first National Social Value Conference will focus on BRIDGING THE GAP between the public, private, voluntary sectors and communities, identifying the challenges and opportunities for working together to build a stronger and a more resilient society. The event has been designed to ensure that there is an opportunity to learn from tailored and high quality content, but also to contribute to the development of a broader social value agenda for both public and private sector organisations.

Key Note Panel

Key note speakers include the new Mayor of the West Midlands, Andy Street, the CEO of Trafford Council, Theresa Grant, Jonathon Porritt OBE, Founder Director of Forum for the Future, Adrian Thacker, Senior Head of National Partnerships at the Prince’s Trust, and Rt. Hon. Hazel Blears, a leading member of the National Advisory Board on Impact Investing.

Workshops and Rotating Sessions on Social Value

Following the key note panel, the National Social Value Taskforce will be releasing the National Framework for Social Value Measurement, after which there will be 3 interactive sessions.

  • Session 1 will explore winning work with the public sector and how to maximise your social value submission
  • Session 2 will look at the latest innovation and how to maximise the involvement of VCSEs
  • Session 3 will cover best practice procurement and legal issues.

Deep Dive Social Value Sessions

After lunch, there will be four sponsored deep dive syndicate sessions:

Health, Well-being and Social Value. This will help identify the key steps that need to be taken to embed social value into the health sector. The session will look at the specific challenges faced by the health sector in embedding social value into procurement and opportunities for the health sector to partner with local organisations to deliver better value.

Speakers include: Dr James Kingsland OBE, President of the National Association of Primary Care, and Professor Simon Brake, Chief Executive of the CCG for Walsall. Phil Loach, Chief Fire Officer for West Midlands, will be chairing this session.

Integrating Social Value into Planning and Development. If social value were integrated into the planning system it could deliver an additional £15bn in additional value. Despite this fact, planners and developers are struggling to find common ground and a common language to discuss and agree measures that deliver additional social value. This session will explore how this opportunity can be unlocked and how our planning system may be updated to ensure Social Value is included as a prerequisite for permission.

Speakers include Guy Battle, CEO Social Value Portal, David Green, Delta Planning and Alan Sarjant, Senior Vice President, Prologis

Social Value and the Devolution Agenda. Devolution offers the opportunity for public sector organisations to develop longer term strategies and partnerships to solve some of the more difficult challenges in their region. This session will run by members from the West Midlands Combined Authority and will look specifically at how organisations can collaborate and develop stronger supplier partnerships as well as exploring the potential of cross border collaboration to meet the greatest needs.

Speakers will include Rachael Morgan, Head of Procurement WMCA.

Delivering Social Value through Effective Frameworks. Frameworks offer a unique opportunity to develop longer term private/public sector partnerships, but there remain significant challenges to making this a reality. This session will look to identify and solve these challenges including the tailoring of local priorities and retrospective commitments for suppliers. It will show case some of the best practice frameworks and examine the key steps to ensure success and avoid failure.

Speakers include Victoria Brambini, MD Scape Procure, David Boyer at CEO, Warrington Borough Council.

The event will be wrapped up with a final speech from Chris White, sponsor of the Social Value Act, followed by drinks and canapes.
